What Makes a Great Acting Headshot?
By Joe Edelman

Acting Headshot

Personality, personality and YES even MORE personality!

And… the photo should look like YOU!!!

Models have it easy - they submit a comp card with 5 or more photos to sell their look and personality. Actors submit an 8x10 glossy print with a headshot on it.

One chance - one photo to make a good first impression, show what you look like as well as your body type and to convince a casting agency or director that you have loads of personality.

Sound tough? Not really - but it does require the proper preparation to insure that you are representing yourself with a photograph that will make any casting director or agent want to meet you as soon as they see it.

Did I mention personality?
Your personality is what makes you unique. There are plenty of people who look similar to you. Your personality is what is going to set you apart. Oh and don't forget - LOOK LIKE YOU! Glamour is not an option.

What kind of acting are you going to do? Theater? Television? Motion Pictures? Commercials? Trade Shows? Be sure to select clothing that is properly suited for the different looks that you want to market yourself for.

Face shot or ¾ body shot?
A face shot is the best way to show your personality. Best for film and television work, a face shot is great for showing your eyes and your eyes will make or break a photo

¾ body shots are good for giving a casting director a better look at your body and how clothes fit you. This is ideal if you are interested in modeling clothes for commercials. But be careful - it is harder to see your eyes.

Use a Makeup Artist
Male or female - use a makeup artist. You are an actor not a makeup artist so don't do your own makeup. This photo session is going to create the image that will ALWAYS go in the door before you do. If your makeup artist does not do hair - hire a hair stylist also.

Choose your outfits carefully
Avoid whites. Remember most headshots are in Black & White. Pink, Blue and Beige are "white" enough for a Black & White headshot. Texture is good. V-necks can be dangerous. Solid colors are a must - no florals, patterns or stripes.
